Maple Barbeque Sauce: Make It With Ingredients You’re Likely To Have On Hand

Maple Barbeque Sauce

Maple Barbeque Sauce

We all know that men love their barbecue sauces, and so this recipe comes from Hank Shaw, a hunter and former line cook who often shares his culinary expertise on Simply Recipes. We tweaked a couple of the ingredients to make it more natural and healthy, but the taste is equally stellar.

Store-bought barbecue sauce often has a dark side: preservatives and flavorings we’d rather not know about, coupled with exceptionally high amounts of high fructose corn syrup and other unhealthy sweeteners. But it’s simple to make at home with ingredients you’re likely to have on hand. Sweetening it with maple syrup escalates the flavor, while bumping corn syrup off the list of junk going into your body.

Order your organic maple syrup, coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, and molasses here to have it shipped, and here to pick it up from any of 50 locations in Tennessee. Once a year, we bring in a truckload of organic maple syrup straight from the farm in Vermont – totally worth waiting for! Sign up for our emails and we’ll let you know when it’s time.

1/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup butter
2-3 chipotle chilies, grated
1 medium yellow onion, diced
1/3 cup bourbon
6 ounces tomato paste
1/4 cup and 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup dark molasses
1/3 cup worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup and 2 tablespoons maple syrup (dark, for robust maple flavor)
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
Salt to taste

Cook onions in butter and coconut oil. Add other ingredients and simmer five minutes, or until its the right consistency. Run it through the blender or vitamix.
