Honest Apple Crisp

Apple Crisp That Doesn’t Lie

I never really did like Apple Crisp, or any kind of crisp really, for one simple reason. It wasn’t crispy. The apples turn to formless, bland mush, and the stuff on the top gets soggy, and…ew. Not appetizing. It smells great, and I loved the idea, but I just never could get that excited about it. If we were having crisp and ice cream for dessert, I would bypass the crisp and go straight for the ice cream.

Well, the unavoidable day came when a friend brought Apple Crisp over for dessert to our house, and to be polite I had some when everyone else did. And do you know what? After I finished that helping, I went back and got more. This crisp was different than all the others I’d had! It wasn’t goopy and thick, the apples had form and texture, the crumbles on top were actually crunchy and sweet and delicious!

Thank goodness for real, honest crisp. So here’s the recipe! Maybe you’d like to have it for breakfast with your family one day; after all, it IS apples and oatmeal! ;D

Ingredients:
For the topping…
1 cup oats
3/4 cup rapadura
1/2 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 stick butter, melted
For the apples…
2 tablespoons flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup rapadura
and of course, apples

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 375. Get your 8″ by 8″ pan and butter the bottom and edges to make washing up easier later on.¬†Peel, core, and dice some apples until you get your pan filled up. Mix the flour, rapadura, and cinnamon in with them until they are all coated.

In a separate bowl, mix together the ingredients for the crisp top until it’s a nice, coarse, crumbly texture, and then sprinkle over the apples! Place in the oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes.

Ta-da! All finished! A hot, yummy dessert or breakfast, all ready to serve!
