How To Easily Make Great Tasting Ice Cream And Avoid MSG & GMO’s

The BEST Sweetener For Homemade Ice Cream

Sure, you could sweeten your homemade ice cream with white sugar. It would certainly taste delicious, but aren’t you trying to stay away from GMO’s?

Maybe you didn’t realize that most refined sugar is made from genetically modified sugar beets.

It’s true.

“If a non-organic product made in North American lists “sugar” as an ingredient (and NOT pure cane sugar), then it is almost certainly a combination of sugar from both sugar cane and GM sugar beets.” (Non GMO Shopping Guide)

Safe alternatives are honey, and rapadura, but who wants ice cream that tastes like some kind of health food?

If you love ice cream as much as we do, you’re going to love it even better when you make it yourself with our “Golden” grade maple syrup. Golden – or Golden With Delicate Taste, as it’s officially named – has a very mild, light flavor that will only add sweetness to your ice cream without messing up the flavors with maple.

Your mint chocolate chip is not going to taste like maple-walnut-mint-chocolate chip. Nobody will ever know it’s got maple in it.

You’re going to love it!

Downright Unconscionable Ingredients In Store Bought Ice Cream

The other day we were at our local Walmart grabbing a few things we needed for our meals. We rarely buy commercial ice cream, but for some reason, I decided we had to have some that night, and so my husband went down the freezer isle to grab it for me.

Like I said, we almost never buy ice cream at the store, but when we do it’s always Breyers because their basic flavors – chocolate and vanilla at least – are made with real ingredients. So Breyers vanilla is what he picked out.

But this time the carton seemed unfamiliar. It was a “super creamy” version or something like that so I took a peek at the label, just to make sure this was something we could enjoy with the kids.

Nope.

And the French vanilla we grabbed next was equally bad.

I was shocked to find so many genetically modified and MSG-laden ingredients on the label of a brand we’ve been trusting. How many other times have I blindly grabbed a carton of Breyers, thinking I was getting a natural ice cream?

These offensive ingredients are the reason you may want to consider investing in an ice cream maker like mine if you don’t already have one.

This list is from Breyers, considered to be a “natural” brand. Many of the ice cream brands have ingredients far more dreadful than these, with artificial flavorings and colors that are linked to autism, ADHD, allergies, asthma, and worse. [source]

Corn Syrup

  • almost always made from genetically modified corn

Mono And Diglycerides

  • made from soy beans, again, an item that’s tops on the list of genetically modified foods [source]

Carrageenan

  • known to contain MSG, a neurotoxin [source]
  • Additionally, carrageenan is associated with inflammation of the intestines, inducing symptoms similar to those of ulcerative colitis[source].

Natural Flavor

  • So called natural flavors can be a sneaky way to disguise more MSG, fake vanilla, and other additives you’d rather not eat.

Sugar

  • Refined sugar is another hiding place for GMO’s because it’s usually made from genetically modified beets.

I’m on guard now, and I hope you are too. No more grab and run in the ice cream isle!

Turns out Breyers has at least four kinds of vanilla ice cream, and only one of them is made from real foods, well, if you count GM sugar as a real food.

The best way to avoid nasty ingredients in your ice cream is to make it yourself. You know exactly what goes into it; your own wholesome ingredients instead of all those test-tube concoctions in the store-bought stuff.

Try our family’s favorite chocolate chip or mint chip recipe and let me know what you think! I’ve provided two separate ingredient lists, one for a 2 quart ice cream maker and the other for a quart and a half.

Maple Sweetened Chocolate Chip Or Mint Chip (1 1/2 quarts)

Ingredients:
3 1/3 cups heavy cream/whipping cream, preferably local
1 egg yolk from free range chickens
1/2 to 2/3 cup real Golden grade maple syrup
1 tablespoon arrowroot flour
1 tablespoon real vanilla extract
1/2 of a Vivani chocolate bar, chopped or 1/4 cup chocolate chips
3/8 teaspoon peppermint extract (optional)

Directions:
Beat egg yolks and blend in remaining ingredients. Pour everything but the chocolate into your ice cream maker and process according to the manufacturer’s instructions. To make a delicious mint chocolate chip, add 3/8 of a teaspoon of real mint extract to the mix.

When the ice cream is almost frozen, put the chocolate chips in. This keeps them from sinking to the bottom.

Easy as that. Enjoy!
