Every Mother Wants What is Best for Her Child.
How can you Give your Wee One a Boost?
by Delaney Wofford
Einstein was once a teeny tiny little embryo, surrounded by the warmth and darkness of the womb. Maybe you have a child developing at that stage, or maybe you are hoping to, soon. But whatever your situation, there is a way you can help ensure a healthy pregnancy for you, and a “bright” future for your little one.
Continuing on to the next part in our series on Cod Liver Oil, in this article we will be looking at the benefits of taking this superfood supplement during pregnancy, nursing, and the developmental stages of your child.
Signs in the Mouth
Remember how we talked about the fact that the mouth reflects on overall health? The health and proper structure of the jaw, teeth, palate, tongue, and gums is a very telling indicator as to the health and function of the rest of the body.
We see yet another example of this in the results we observe when a mother takes cod liver oil during her pregnancy.
The young ladies in the picture both have gorgeous, straight, white teeth, even though their parents had crowded, crooked sets in their mouths, simply because the mothers ate a nutrient-dense diet that included Cod Liver Oil during pregnancy and then continued giving the girls these foods as they grew. Other amazing stories of poor dental trends turned around can be found at www.westonaprice.org. It really does work; and if a mother consistently takes a healthy dose of Cod Liver Oil every day while pregnant, it can even serve to correct degenerative genetic problems in the mouth. Think of this…
You could actually be doing away with the need for an orthodontist in your kids’ teen years, before your child is even born! We did.
But as we talked about before; the mouth is always a sign of what’s going on elsewhere in the intricately designed mechanism we call our body. What other benefits can be reaped if Cod Liver Oil is taken while your child is still in the womb? Or even before you conceive?
Mamma’s Helper
Cod Liver Oil isn’t only for your baby. Women tend to get cavities at a much higher rate during pregnancy because our bodies are pouring so much extra into the developing baby. Minerals needed for the baby are frequently pulled from our teeth, resulting in cavities.
So, take a good mineral supplement, right? That should help.
Wrong.
According to Dr. Price, in order for our bodies to absorb the minerals in our diets, we need an abundant supply (ideally 10 times more than what was found in the common American diet of the 1930’s) of fat soluble activators: vitamins A, D, and K2. Without these activators, our bodies cannot use minerals, or even water soluble vitamins like C and B, efficiently.
Taking more minerals just won’t solve the problem alone. We have to add fat soluble activators to our diet.
With its rich supply of vitamins A, D, and K2, Cod Liver Oil provides these activators, not only giving your baby’s teeth a better chance at being strong, healthy, and looking lovely, but also supplying you with the nutrients you need, so that your body doesn’t start “borrowing” minerals from your teeth.
Cod Liver Oil and Fertility
Cod Liver Oil is high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which are incredibly healthy, as opposed to the evil and insidious Omega-6 fats that saturate almost all of our modern foods. As it happens, Omega 3’s should be on anyone’s list, who aspires to being a mother or father. Why? Because substances high in Omega 3 fats, (I’ll give you a hint…Cod Liver Oil) help with this entire list:
- Aiding in hormonal regulation in the body.
- Increasing and promoting healthy cervical mucous production.
- Promoting regular ovulation.
- Decreasing inflammatory fertility issues such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts.
- Reducing painful menstruation known as dysmenorrhea.
- Improving the quality of the uterus by increasing the blood flow to the reproductive organs.
- Supporting proper sperm production.
Another added benefit of the Omega 3 fats in the oil is that it significantly cuts down on postpartum depression in new mothers.
Cod Liver Oil for Your Baby
Once you have conceived, there is a tiny, precious little life growing inside you, dependent on you for everything. Cod Liver Oil could be a tremendous boost to your little one, and here’s why. Cod Liver Oil contains two components known as DHA and EPA. They are the two different Omega-3 acids.
During your baby’s first days of life, those essential fatty acids are needful for your baby’s brain, eye, and heart development. High levels of DHA are required for the baby’s brain to function properly; and that includes development, and even intelligence!
If high enough concentrations of DHA are not reached, there is an increased risk of premature births, low birth weight, and hyperactivity in children, including disorders like ADHD or ADD.
DHA is important to grow a healthy nervous system, EPA is important to grow a healthy circular system.
But I know that the bit at the top caught your eye. The bit about how you can give your baby an edge, help their brains function better, help them become…well, smarter. Take a look at this:
“A study published in Pediatrics (2003; 111:e39–44) showed that mothers who took cod liver oil everyday in pregnancy and 3 months postpartum while breastfeeding, had more intelligent children than mothers who did not.
Other studies are showing that babies born to mothers with high levels of DHA do better with visual acuity and visual learning tests. With optimal development that these nutrients provide, studies show that your baby will enjoy enhanced attention span and cognitive function after the birth as well, which will help them learn more effectively.”
~Dalene Barton-Schuster, C.H., Doula
Read the entire study here for yourself, and you’ll find they’re suggesting that taking cod liver oil while you’re pregnant, and continuing to give your babies cod liver oil after they’re born can actually increase their IQ in a measurable way.
Cod Liver Oil Can Prevent Preemies
As many as six to ten percent of births are premature. Babies born too early run a much higher risk of physical and learning disabilities. Having enough DHA and EPA in your body, like those levels found in Cod Liver Oil, have been found to lengthen gestation time, avoid miscarriage, and prevent the preemie.
Sounds Great, But….My Baby is Already Born
Don’t worry, moms. Although it’s best if you can take cod liver oil while you’re pregnant, and even before, it’s not too late to start even now that your baby has already entered the world. And the sooner, the better.
If you are breastfeeding, taking Cod Liver Oil yourself will supply your little guy or girl with all the benefits in the milk you provide. Once they reach age three months, to about their twelve year, you can give them a daily dose of about one half teaspoon of high vitamin fermented Cod Liver Oil daily. Twelve years to adult can get all they need from one teaspoon daily, and pregnant and nursing mothers should go with two.
We suggest using non-flavored cod liver oil for babies until they’re old enough to care about the taste because the cinnamon and mint flavors are too strong for many little ones.
